Lisbeth* was only 12 years old when she married Ihan* in Guatemala. She suffered physical, sexual, and emotional abuse daily. At 13, Lisbeth became pregnant with the first of their three children.
Ihan ordered his relatives to kidnap Lisbeth and smuggle her into the United States where frequent rapes and abuse continued, while he left the children behind in Guatemala with a friend. Lisbeth was separated from her children for many years.
In 2011, a particularly violent incident resulted in Lisbeth’s hospitalization. Following this incident, Lisbeth ran away from Ihan. She came to CCLA for representation to secure an Injunction for Protection and a Dissolution of Marriage. Although we were unable to locate Ihan for service for the Injunction, we were still successful in getting her divorced through constructive service.
In early 2019, Lisbeth was finally able to bring her children from Guatemala to the United States. The children innocently revealed Lisbeth’s address to Ihan. Lisbeth returned to our office for representation to secure Injunctions for Protection since Ihan was now threatening both her and the children. Once again CCLA was successful in obtaining Injunctions against Ihan on behalf of Lisbeth and the children. Lisbeth was awarded 100% of the time-sharing of her minor children.
Lisbeth has since remarried, and leads a happy life with her children and new husband.
