Scott D. Owens, Esq. to Receive Spirit of Justice Award
at 15th Annual For the Public Good

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (August 1, 2016) – Legal Aid Service of Broward County (LAS) and Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida (CCLA) announce that Scott D. Owens, Esq. has been selected to receive the Spirit of Justice Award at the 15th Annual For the Public Good. The event will be held Thursday, October 27, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six in Fort Lauderdale.

Scott Owens is with the law firm of Scott D. Owens, P.A., a consumer law practice in Hollywood, Florida. As one of Florida’s most recognized consumer advocates, Scott represents consumers with regard to violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), violations of the Florida Consumer Collection Practices Act (FCCPA), violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), and violations of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA). Scott has certified more than twenty class actions since becoming a member of the National Association of Consumer Advocates (NACA) in 2007, including several multi-million dollar class action settlements in 2015. His class action settlements have benefited several cy pres recipients to the tune of several hundred thousand dollars, including CCLA and LAS. Scott also is a mentor to consumer law attorneys at LAS and CCLA, co-counseling on challenging cases and generally lending his time and expertise.

“As an attorney whose practice is devoted to consumer protection, I am thankful for the opportunity to share my knowledge and provide pro bono legal assistance to others,” says Owens. “I believe that the more privileged among us have a professional and moral duty to assist the less fortunate, the downtrodden, and those who are generally underrepresented in our society.  Unless we strive toward this goal, there will never be justice for all – only the few.”

The Spirit of Justice Award was created in 2014 to recognize those who embody the “spirit” of the work done by CCLA and LAS and to commemorate the 40th and 10th anniversaries of each respectively.

The annual fundraiser will honor members of the community who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to secure justice and change lives for the underprivileged and underserved in Broward County. An estimated 450 Broward County lawyers, judges and community leaders are expected to be in attendance, for what is widely-noted throughout Broward as the premier pro-bono recognition event of the year.

Proceeds from the event benefit children and families served by LAS and CCLA and enable both organizations to serve greater numbers of those in need.  A few of the many legal services provided include helping seniors and veterans gain much needed benefits, abused children in foster care, the homeless, children in need of special education, victims of domestic violence and families losing their homes to foreclosure. Annual sponsors of LAS and CCLA include Valley National Bank; US Legal Support; Kim Vaughan Lerner, LLP; Farmer, Jaffe, Weissing, Edwards, Fistos & Lehrman, PL; and CopyScan Technologies.

To place congratulatory remarks or advertisements recognizing Scott Owens or for more insight into sponsorship opportunities and how you can get involved, please contact dlange@legalaid.org or call 954-736-2429.
