Stories of Justice: From Fear to a Path Forward

For nearly nine years, Joan—a senior living with serious medical conditions—had called the same house her home. She contributed financially, cared for the residence, and built her life there with her domestic partner. But behind closed doors, she endured years of domestic violence and emotional abuse. With limited income and no close family nearby, she had nowhere else to turn.

After a domestic violence incident led to her partner’s arrest and a no-contact order, her partner filed an unlawful detainer action, claiming she was merely an unauthorized guest with no right to remain in the home. In an instant, the place she had known as home was at risk of being taken away. Already coping with serious health challenges and the trauma of domestic abuse, she faced the terrifying possibility of homelessness.

When she came to Coast to Coast Legal Aid, she was frightened and overwhelmed. Our Senior Law Unit immediately stepped in, preparing an Answer and advocating that she be recognized for what she was: a long-term resident of the home, not an unlawful guest. Our Senior Law Unit coordinated with our Family Law & Victims of Crime Unit to address the domestic violence matter and help protect her from further abuse by securing a civil injunction for protection.

Our advocacy secured Joan more than two additional months in her home before her hearing—precious time in a process that can move quickly. Those weeks changed what was possible for Joan. Instead of facing immediate displacement with nowhere to go, she could remain safely housed while exploring permanent housing options and continuing to address her health needs.

The transformation was more than legal. Joan went from feeling frightened and alone to knowing she had advocates standing beside her. She had time to breathe, plan, and begin looking toward a safer future.

Coast to Coast Legal Aid’s work continues as she moves toward stable housing and greater independence. But for now, Joan has something she feared she was about to lose: time, stability, and hope—and the knowledge that she does not have to face this alone.
