Legal Aid Service of Broward County and Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida Announce 2018 Honorees on Law Day

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (May 4, 2018) – Broward Lawyers Care, the pro bono project of Legal Aid Service of Broward County (LAS) and Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida (CCLA), announced the recipients of their 2018 Attorney of the Year, Law Firm of the Year and Spirit of Justice Award at the annual Law Day Luncheon hosted by the Broward County Bar Association on May 4. These awards will be presented at the organization’s annual FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD event in October 2018.

The Attorney of the Year is Dale Webner, Esq., Law Firm of the Year is Weiss Serota Helfman Cole and Bierman, PL, and the Spirit of Justice Award recipient is Kathleen Cannon of the United Way of Broward County. Additionally, the CCLA Commitment to Justice Awardee is Joshua Levenson, Esq. and the LAS Russell E. Carlisle Advocacy Awardee is Robin Moselle, Esq.

“The ongoing need for volunteer legal assistance and vital supportive services to the poor and disadvantaged affects the daily life of many people in our community, including veterans and families,” said Steve Jaffe, chair of the LAS/CCLA joint board of directors. “These awards honor those who recognize that need and have committed themselves to serving the community.”

2018 Attorney of the Year: Dale Webner, Esq.

Webner has dedicated over 500 pro bono hours to helping our clients preserve their homes and ensuring access to the legal system. He is a relentless advocate for the disadvantaged in Broward County and has been taking pro bono cases since 2005, one lasting more than nine years.

2018 Law Firm of the Year: Weiss Serota Helfman Cole and Bierman, PL

The Law Firm of the Year award honors a firm that has a long history of supporting LAS and CCLA. Weiss Serota has made major contributions to the legal service providers and their clients here in Broward County. They provide a trifecta of support to our organizations including financial assistance, pro bono legal representation and volunteer service to our organizations.

2018 Spirit of Justice Award: Kathleen Cannon

Through her leadership at United Way of Broward County, Cannon has played an integral role in establishing and expanding the partnership with LAS and CCLA to provide legal services to Veterans through its Mission United program. The alliance ensures that responsive and effective legal counsel is available to Veteran households in Broward County.

2018 Commitment to Justice Award: Joshua Levenson, Esq.

Levenson has worked with CCLA on pro bono cases since 2013 through his participation in the Mickey Rooney Financial Elder Abuse Pro Bono Project at Holland & Knight. The project is designed to assist elderly clients who have had assets misdirected and/or taken by fiduciaries or others in positions of trust against their will and intentions.

The Russell E. Carlisle Advocacy Award: Robin Moselle, Esq.

The Russell E. Carlisle Advocacy Award is presented annually to an advocate whose actions exemplify a personal and professional commitment to making justice available to the poor and disadvantaged, and this year that person is Moselle. Throughout her career spanning over 25 years, Moselle has been a steadfast supporter of funding for legal assistance to the poor. She has personally and professionally made financial contributions, leading by example among her peers and colleagues. Moselle also does not shy away from pro bono work, taking a number of cases from Broward Lawyers Care over the years.

The official awards will be presented at the 18th Annual FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD event, which will be held in October 2018. FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD is an annual fundraiser for LAS and CCLA.  Proceeds benefit families and individuals in gaining access to equal justice.  To learn more, contact Dorian Lange, Director of Development, at 954-736-2429 or dlange@legalaid.org.
