FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (June 13, 2016) – The Executive Council of Legal Aid Service of Broward County (LAS) and Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida (CCLA) recently hosted its sixth annual Bridge to Justice Breakfast, presented by Goya Foods, at the Antique Car Museum in Ft. Lauderdale.

The event welcomed 180 attendees drawing from numerous business interests in the Broward community, and focused on how these two legal aid organizations work cooperatively and collaboratively with area partners to deliver pro bono programs and services to the members of the community who need access to justice. Keynote speaker Gilbert King, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America, spoke about the important role attorneys played in the civil rights movement. King reminded the audience that it was attorneys like Thurgood Marshall and his team who laid the earliest groundwork for the civil rights movement by taking cases such as Groveland – risking their careers and lives to fight for what they believed in. It also was attorneys who proposed early civil rights legislation which drew attention to the issues faced by the African Americans.

Adele I. Stone, Esq., co-managing shareholder of the Ft. Lauderdale office of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, PC, and founder of the Executive Council and the Bridge to Justice Breakfast fundraiser, was the event’s master of ceremonies. Lori Rabinowitz of MARCA and chairperson of the Executive Council also participated in the program.

Proceeds from the event benefit the 6,000 children and families served annually by LAS and CCLA.  Both programs extend free civil legal services and representation to the low-income community including veterans, abused children in foster care, the homeless, victims of domestic violence and senior citizens, among others.

Event sponsors included Goya Foods, Valley National Bank, US Legal Support, the Daily Business Review, Patty and Miles McGrane, CopyScan, Berger Singerman, LLP, CNA, Haliczer Pettis & Schwamm, PA, and United Automobile Insurance Corporation (UAIC).
