Story of Justice: CCLA Retains Life’s Essentials for Senior

At 77 years old, Walter lives alone on a limited fixed income, relying entirely on his monthly Social Security benefits, along with subsidized housing and SNAP (food assistance), to cover life’s basic necessities. Every dollar is carefully budgeted, leaving no room for unexpected expenses. When his Social Security payment was suddenly reduced by more than $500 due to a loss of his Medicare Savings Program benefits, he was left struggling to make ends meet. The reduction stemmed from an administrative error in which his modest annual pension was incorrectly calculated as monthly income—making him appear ineligible for a program he rightfully qualified for.

Determined to resolve the issue, Walter made multiple calls to the Department of Children and Families and spoke with several representatives and supervisors, all of whom assured him the error had been corrected. It had not.

Relying on this misinformation, he missed an important deadline to request a Medicaid Fair Hearing. It was only when his reduced Social Security payment arrived that he realized the problem remained unresolved.

When Walter turned to Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida, our advocates immediately stepped in to assist. Recognizing that he faced barriers accessing the online system and lacked reliable transportation to apply in person, we helped Walter complete and submit a new Medicare Savings Program application. When the application was again mishandled, Coast to Coast Legal Aid engaged directly with the agency through persistent follow-up and advocacy to ensure his case received proper review.

Coast to Coast Legal Aid’s intervention resulted in Walter’s successful recertification for the Medicare Savings Program, along with retroactive benefits to correct the agency’s earlier error. In total, he received $732 in retroactive payments, and with the reinstatement of his ongoing benefits, the total financial impact exceeded $3,100. Walter is now receiving his full Social Security payment and will be reimbursed for several months of improper Medicare premium deductions.
