Ed, a 66-year-old disabled veteran, has spent his life in service to our country. Now, in his golden years, he lives on a fixed income, carefully stretching every dollar while continuing treatment for his disability. When he was blindsided by a lawsuit from a creditor demanding nearly $1,700—a staggering sum for someone in his position—he was overcome with worry. The weight of this unexpected debt threatened his fragile financial stability, leaving him fearful of what the future might hold.
With nowhere else to turn, Ed reached out to Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida (CCLA). Understanding the gravity of his situation, CCLA immediately stepped in, advocating on his behalf. Without disclosing Ed’s sensitive medical details, we shared his circumstances with the opposing law firm, appealing to their sense of justice and compassion. After CCLA’s persistent negotiations, they agreed to fully discharge the debt and dismiss the lawsuit. More than just a legal victory, this was an acknowledgment of Ed’s sacrifice—a recognition of the service he gave to our country.
For Ed, this resolution meant more than just financial relief; it restored his dignity and peace of mind. Without our intervention, he likely would have faced a crushing judgment against him—one that could have put his security at risk. Instead, he can now move forward without the looming threat of garnishment, free from the overwhelming stress that had weighed so heavily on his shoulders.
We are honored to stand beside our senior veterans, ensuring that those who have given so much are not left to struggle alone. Ed had the courage to reach out, and we were privileged to fight for him—because no veteran should have to battle life’s hardships alone.
