Story of Justice: Survivor of Human Trafficking Has Record Cleared

When Olivia first came to us, she carried the weight of a past that no one should have to endure, and a sliver of hope that her future could finally be unburdened by it.

As a teenager, Olivia was sex trafficked for years by three individuals in Broward County, Florida. Like many survivors of trafficking, she was charged with criminal acts committed under force, fraud and coercion. Her record included charges directly tied to her victimization. These charges followed her into adulthood, limiting her opportunities long after the exploitation had ended.

Our Human Trafficking Legal Program represented Olivia in a human trafficking–related expungement case. We worked closely with her and prepared the necessary legal filings, taking care to ensure her story was told accurately and with compassion. Central to the process was a meeting with the Assistant State Attorney who handles expungement matters in Broward County.

During that meeting, Olivia bravely spoke about her victimization and the years of trauma she endured. Reliving those experiences was emotionally overwhelming.  Our CCLA attorney was present to help guide the conversation and support her as she shared her story—pausing when needed, redirecting questions, and ensuring she felt safe and heard throughout the process. Olivia’s courage in that moment was extraordinary.

Olivia’s life today reflects remarkable resilience. She is now a mother and works with others who are experiencing victimization and trauma. Every day, she helps individuals who are living through experiences like her own, turning her pain into purpose and advocacy.

CCLA filed the necessary pleadings and successfully obtained a signed expungement order, clearing a trafficking-related charge that had shadowed her for years. Additionally, we coordinated a warm referral for related matters in another county to ensure she continues receiving support beyond our service region.

This past year has tested Olivia in unimaginable ways. While this case was pending, she experienced personal loss. Through it all, she maintained a hopeful outlook, a generous spirit, and a firm commitment to her family’s future.

Olivia has expressed deep gratitude for this legal relief, believing it will open doors to the next chapter of her life and career. Her story is a powerful reminder that when survivors are given support, dignity, and access to justice, healing and transformation are possible.
