Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida and the Broward County Bar Association’s Elder Law Section Help Close the Justice Gap for Low Income Seniors With a Free Advance Directive Clinic

Coral Springs June 11, 2024 The Senior Citizen Law Project at Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida, in partnership with the Broward County Bar Association’s Elder Law Section, held a free Advance Directive clinic at St. Andrew Towers, a HUD-subsidized building for low-income seniors in Coral Springs, FL.

The clinic highlighted a significant gap in the community: the lack of awareness and preparedness regarding advance directives amongst low-income seniors.

On the day of the clinic, eight dedicated volunteer attorneys from the private bar and seven Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida attorneys and paralegal professionals provided individualized assistance to a room filled with grateful seniors. Each senior met one-on-one with a lawyer for about an hour.  They left with fully completed advance directives that ensure their wishes are respected. By providing these crucial services, Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida and the Broward County Bar Association are not only addressing a pressing need, but also paving the way for a more informed and protected community.

Sarah Barker, the Director of the Senior Citizen Law Project at Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida, highlighted the importance of this clinic: “We are thrilled to see the legal community come together to address a critical need. Too few people have these essential documents, and events like this help ensure that our seniors are protected and their voices heard.”

The Executive Director of Coast to Coast Legal Aid, Lisa Goldberg, echoed this sentiment: “This clinic is a testament to the power of collaboration and the profound impact we can have when we work together. The gratitude expressed by the participants underscores the importance of making advance directives accessible to everyone.”

The success of the event has inspired plans for future clinics, with volunteer attorneys expressing eagerness to continue this vital work. As one volunteer remarked, “Seeing the relief and peace of mind these documents bring to our seniors makes all the effort worthwhile. We look forward to organizing more events like this in the near future.”
